The widest variety of Sri Lanka’s wildlife may be found in the southeast corner of the country. Many species, including sloth bears, elephants, buffalo, monkeys, deer, crocodiles, and the endangered Sri Lankan leopard, live in diverse habitats, including scrub plains, rainforests, rocky outcrops, freshwater lakes, rivers, and beaches.
One of Sri Lanka’s largest and most famous national parks consists of five different blocks covering 141 square kilometres. Many animals live in Yala’s diverse ecosystems, including scrub plains, jungles, rocky outcrops, woodland, mangroves, freshwater lakes, rivers, and coastal lagoons. These habitats include sloth bears, herds of elephants, buffalo, monkeys, sambar, deer, and crocodiles. For many, the main draw is the endangered leopard subspecies ‘Panthera pardus kotiya’.Yala has the highest number of leopards anywhere in the world.
