Weddings in Sri Lanka are unlike any other.

Horoscopes, auspicious periods, and rituals are intertwined with colourful dancers and drummers, followed by a feast shared by family and friends to commemorate the union of two lives.

Because of the island’s vibrant mix of ethnic cultures, Sri Lanka is home to various religious groups, including Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, all of which practise different rituals but share an underlying tradition.

Couples have the option of having a non-denominational service performed by a Registrar of Marriages, a church ceremony, or a traditional Buddhist ‘Poruwa’ wedding.

Weddings are held from Monday through Saturday, except for bank holidays.

Before the wedding ceremony, a minimum of five days of residency in Sri Lanka is required.

Marriage requires a minimum age of 18 years.

Parental approval is necessary if the child is under the age of 21.

All of the ceremonies are carried out in line with British law and are legally binding.

If you are not British, we recommend that you obtain counsel on the requirements of your foreign marriage.
