The Kitulgala-Kelani Forest Reserve
Kitulgala is Sri Lanka’s one of the adventure activity hubs. Canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, trekking, waterfall abseiling, and other activities are available. The stunning beauty here served as the background for David Lean’s Oscar-winning classic The Bridge over the River Kwai, which he directed in the 1950s.
Rafting will be on grade 3 and 4 rapids in whitewater. The Kelani River includes 5 big rapids and 4 minor rapids over a 5km stretch. Spartan Escapes offers certified instructors who provide high-quality rafts, safety equipment, and a thorough safety briefing.
Kitulgala offers sections of the river not just for skilled canoeists in Class III and IV water farther upstream but also for beginners who can paddle peacefully downstream in calm waters while enjoying the view.
The Forest Reserve, also known as Makandawa, covers more than 1,100 hectares and is a lowland rainforest that progressively rises to higher elevations. It is typically accessed by crossing the Kelani river by boat. Wander across the jungle-clad highlands or the rubber and low-country tea estates. It is best to wear leech socks and take plenty of mosquito repellent when exploring the forest in quest of the vast range of species that inhabit this area.
There are several on and off-road mountain riding and cycling paths in and near Kitulgala. You can even be sure that your chosen course is mostly downhill. One excursion is to the Beli Lena caves, where ten remains of “Balangoda Man,” Sri Lanka’s earliest inhabitant, thought to have lived there 32,000 years ago, were unearthed.
The intense and overwhelming sensation of the water, mixed with the fact that you are dangling on a rope and there is nothing but water beneath and above you, will give you an adrenaline rush like you have never felt before. Another activity where we advocate using the most experienced and skilled operators is this one. Starting at the top of the waterfall, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains and rain forests, and you will also have to trek to the top of the waterfall.
