Sri Lanka wildlife

One of Sri Lanka’s most important tourist attractions is its wildlife.

Sri Lanka is the best destination for big game safaris outside of Africa in terms of biodiversity. Regardless of how bold a claim is, Sri Lanka’s wildlife credentials speak for themselves. The country’s incredible wildlife attractions include leopards, elephants, sloth bears, blue whales, and sperm whales. These animals are just a sampling of the diverse array of wildlife found throughout the country. Its 70 Important Bird Areas are also a birder’s paradise, with many migratory, endemic, and resident avifauna. Sri Lanka is also known for its variety of exotic vegetation, making it a popular tourist destination.

Awe has been generated by none more than those related to the elephant, the world’s largest terrestrial mammal. The largest population of wild elephants in the world may find in Sri Lanka. Minneriya National Park in Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see elephant herds and monitor their behaviour. This phenomenon known as The Gathering occurs there. In the past, elephant herds as large as 400 have been documented in this area. According to Lonely Planet, it is among the world’s top ten wildlife spectacles. The Udawalawe National Park is the only area in the world where visitors are guaranteed to see an elephant.

The Sri Lankan leopard is the country’s most prized animal. There is no other place in this world to see leopards like Yala National Park, which has an unrivalled leopard population. If you visit Block 1, you’ll see at least one leopard every square mile. In addition to the leopard, Sri Lanka is home to various other wildcats, including jungle cats, civet cats, and rusty-spotted cats.

Sri Lankan sloth bear is a subspecies of the sloth bear, which is found mainly in lowland dry forests in Sri Lanka. They are on the brink of extinction, so you are lucky if you spot one in The ‘Palu’ Season. These majestic mammals climb the “palu” trees to gorge themselves on their favourite fruity treats, which is when visitors have seen these gorgeous bears in places like Wasgamuwa National Park, Wilpattu National Park, and Yala.
