South Coast
Spartan Escapes defines Sri Lanka’s cove-like south coast as a long stretch from Weligama to Kelamitiya, which comprises lovely coral-protected bays and headlands and offers a greater diversity of beaches than the west coast. The southern coastal belt’s stunning tropical sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages, pristine wildlife, and lively cultural legacy make it a perfect holiday experience for anyone looking to escape the main tourist destinations.
A lively fishing village with a sandy beach and low-riding waves, this is the ideal site in Sri Lanka for all you beginner surfers to catch your first waves and learn how to surf. Weligama has much more to offer than its name suggests, including ancient temples, natural sanctuaries, diving, and snorkelling. Weligama beach is particularly well-known for its stilt fishermen, who congregate at sunrise and sunset. These fishermen poised on their vertical poles with crossbars, hard at work, attempting to catch little fish with bamboo fishing rods, creating a postcard-perfect scene.
With its bright blue waters and sandy sands, it is simply stunning and immaculately clean. The surf is extensive, with huge waves and rips that make it immensely thrilling for surfers travelling from all over the world. Fringes two sandy bays separated by a rock island reachable at low tide. Mirissa has been dubbed one of the best spots on the planet to observe whales. Dolphins, sperm whales, and blue whales can all be seen. The island’s shoreline is exceptionally close to the continental shelf, where the ocean floor dips considerably, and various marine species can be discovered.
The region is popular with both sunbathers and surfers due to its unspoilt stretch of sand and the steady crash of waves. Take a break from sunbathing and explore the neighbouring quiet, rocky coves, the sea frothing at your feet. Depending on the season, up to five distinct kinds of sea turtles can be observed visiting the shore to lay eggs.
